Friends of the Herbarium

| Description | Upcoming Field Trips | How to Join |

For all of our regular guests and folks familiar with us, you may be asking why we have established the Friends of the CSU Herbarium?  The Friends has been organized to increase public and professional awareness of the herbarium and its resources.  Many people, even on campus, are not aware that perhaps the best representative collection of the Colorado vascular flora is right at their doorstep!  We would also like to increase our role in education by organizing field trips to floristcally interesting areas in Colorado and occasionally arranging for guest speakers to talk about the interesting flora and vegetation of our state.

None the least, The Friends is a way in which funds can be raised to help manage and improve the herbarium, to make it a better resource for us all.  At all times we are trying to improve the herbarium.  Unfortunately, as is all too common, funds are extremely tight.  General use of the herbarium is free to all patrons of course, but numerous opportunities for improvement exist.  To realize these improvements funds are needed.

Some examples of current and planned projects are:

  • Acquisition of floras and keys from all of the western (and some eastern) states.
  • Continued development of distribution maps for plant species based on specimens in CS. We currently have approximately 1/6 of our specimens available for making distribution maps. Eventually, this information will also be available on our web pages!
  • Managing and repairing the specimens currently housed in the herbarium.

We believe that these, and other projects will help make herbarium even more useful and convenient to patrons at CSU and around the world.  By joining The Friends you will help us achieve these goals.

If you decide to support the herbarium by joining The Friends, just print the membership form included below and send it in with your pledge to the address given.  You will be added to our members list and will receive biannual newsletters and announcements of upcoming events.  If you would like to know of other ways you could support the herbarium, or just want more information, feel free to contact us at the source given below:

Upcoming Field Trips

Well, this summer wasn't exactly the best for wildflower viewing...the dry conditions ended the season earlier than expected, so we had to cancel the last field trip scheduled for September 2nd. We will be doing this field trip in Golden Gate State Park next summer though, so don't despair! We did have a good time on our first field trip to the Pawnee National Grasslands in mid-May and to Pingree Park in mid-July!
