For all of our regular guests and folks familiar with us, you may be
asking why we have established the Friends of the CSU Herbarium?
The Friends has been organized to increase public and professional
awareness of the herbarium and its resources. Many people, even on
campus, are not aware that perhaps the best representative collection of
the Colorado vascular flora is right at their doorstep! We would
also like to increase our role in education by organizing field trips to
floristcally interesting areas in Colorado and occasionally arranging for
guest speakers to talk about the interesting flora and vegetation of our
state.
None the least, The Friends is a way in which funds can be raised
to help manage and improve the herbarium, to make it a better resource
for us all. At all times we are trying to improve the herbarium.
Unfortunately, as is all too common, funds are extremely tight. General
use of the herbarium is free to all patrons of course, but numerous opportunities
for improvement exist. To realize these improvements funds are needed.
Some examples of current and planned projects are:
-
Completing the computer inventory of the herbarium's collections and library.
Already collection information from some 50,000 specimens has been added
to a relational database. This information allows patrons to search
for habitat, range, ecological and other information on any of the genera
and species in our collection — all at the touch of a button.
-
Acquisition of floras and keys from all of the western (and some eastern)
states.
-
Continued development of distribution maps for plant species based on specimens in CS. We currently have approximately 1/6 of our specimens available for making distribution maps. Eventually, this information will also be available on our web pages!
-
Increasing the range of the collection to include a better representation
of the flora of surrounding states and under-represented counties in Colorado. We especially need a better representation of specimens from the eastern plains. See our map of specimens collected from each county for more information.
-
Managing and repairing the specimens currently housed in the herbarium.
We believe that these, and other projects will help make herbarium even
more useful and convenient to patrons at CSU and around the world.
By joining The Friends you will help us achieve these goals.
